Banana Leaf

To quote my best friend Jan: "Eating banana leaf when I was visiting Malaysia was one of my top 10 favourite food experiences ever".

I have to agree that there's something about it that makes it a meal that every once in a while I get such strong urges for that I think it must be laced with some kind of drug! Sometimes my tummy churns and grumbles in a way that only banana leaf can satisfy...and yet it's such a simple meal served on a large banana leaf instead of a plate...

All it is is rice topped with a curry of your choice (Chicken, Fish, or Dal)...I always go for the fish curry without fail...three different veggies of the day...for the one pictured above it was the battered deep fried bitter gourd, spinach cooked with some spices, and chopped cucumbers with yogurt... as well as a side of papadam (this is to indian food as what fries are to American food). This is the basic banana leaf meal and then you can choose to add on whatever meat of your choice...a variety of fried fish...chicken cooked in many different styles...rich mutton curries...squid or prawns in sambal...the choices are endless! I however enjoy banana leaf rice in all it's simplicity...I always opt for the basic.

You can choose to eat this with a fork and spoon...but to get the most out of the experience eat it with your hands like it is meant to be...it somehow tastes much better when eaten with your hands...it's difficult to describe what it is about this meal that makes it so wonderful...maybe it's the intermingling of all the different flavours and textures...the crispy battered bitter gourd with the spicy curry soaked rice and a cooling crunch from the cucumber...maybe it's the fact that you're eating with your hands bringing back that feeling of being a child picking up your food and just enjoying it without thinking of etiquette and grace...whatever it is...banana leaf is one of those meals I have to have at least once a month...

My two favourite spots are Kanna's Curry House(No 29, Jalan 17/45, PJ) and Nirvana's(Bangsar right across Bangsar Village II).

Gosh...after writing this I think I know where I need to go for lunch...

Warning: Do not consume if you have to work or stay alert at a meeting after eating...this meal has the tendency to put you in a delicious food coma. It really must be a drug!

Smoothie Craze

I've been on a bit of a smoothie craze lately...Everyday for the past two weeks! There's something comforting about starting each day with a glass of goodness...and it's so easy to make.

I just thought I'd share some of my favourite combinations. I didn't measure out the ingredients when I made my smoothies...I just kinda added stuff if it was too thick or too thin. Play around with it and get it to the consistency that you will enjoy. Just pop everything in a blender...blitz till well combined and enjoy. Easy peasy!

Dragonfruit Banana Smoothie (Pictured Above)
The bright purple dragonfruit is so pretty and not to mention packed with vitamin C, high in fibre, and low in calories. It is also rich in phytoalbumins which have antioxidant properties. Bananas also have many health benefits and you can check out a full list here.

1/2 Dragonfruit
1 Banana
1/4 Cup Soy Milk
3 ice cubes

Peanut-Choc Oat Smoothie
This tasty smoothie gives you a protein and energy boost. Peanutbutter contains fairly high quantities of dietary fiber which helps in regulating both blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Pure cocoa powder
is an excellent source of catechins, which are polyphenols of the flavanol grou that are believed to protect against heart disease, cancer, and various other medical conditions. The oatmeal supplies an additional protein boost and also is a good source of many nutrients.

1 Tbs Peanutbutter
1 Tbs Cocoa Powder
1/2 Banana
3 Tbs Uncooked Instant Oatmeal
1/4 Cup Skim Milk
3 ice cubes

Berry Yoghurt Smoothie
This thick creamy smoothie is absolutely berrylicious! More studies are showing that blueberries play an important role in a healthy diet. They provide a great boost of antioxidants and aid your mind in aging gracefully. Strawberries are also high in phytonutrients and antioxidants as well as vitamin C. Yogurt is a great way to have calcium in your diet and it promotes the growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract.

1 Cup Frozen Blueberries
1 Cup frozen Strawberries
1/2 Cup Plain Yogurt
Splash of Skim Milk
1 Tbs Honey

Play around with fruits in your fridge...there are so many wonderful combinations you can make. I haven't bought mango recently but I'm eager to make a mango yogurt smoothie...mmm!

Robert Rainford - King of the Grill

*Photos for this post are by my talented colleague Aida*

It’s been raining celebrity chefs in our lovely city and I certainly can’t complain! In just a span of a few short months I have had the pleasure of meeting Bobby Chinn , Emmanuel Stroobant, and now most recently the man with a License to Grill…Robert Rainford...
It is a blistering hot afternoon...not even the large multiple buzzing fans and copious amounts of ice cold water can do anything to cool down the atmosphere and the worst thing is that I have chosen to wear a long sleeved top of all days! The two large grills that are ablaze and warming up for the cooking demo by Robert Rainford do not help...

All this discomfort disappears though the moment he makes his appearance...he is able to distract all of the media from the sweltering heat by joking around and teasing us. Soon enough we're laughing along and interacting with him and before you know it he has cooked up one of his specialty dishes that we get to sample(It was really good...could have done with a bit more spiciness but Robert wasn't sure how spicy everyone would want it...hehe...we are Malaysian after all)...Cajun Shrimp with Love Sauce (Recipe Below).

I'm sure you're wondering why it's called a Love Sauce? And no it's not like a love potion that you can conjure up and serve to someone you have a crush on and *presto* he/she is head over heels in love with you...it's actually called a love sauce because Robert believes that any dish with more than 6 ingredients is a labor of love...
Robert’s energetic and warm unpretentious personality translates from on camera to off. This probably has much to do with his mindset while filming. “When I’m on my show I am talking to my daughters…I am teaching them how to barbecue.” Awww...How can you not love a man who keeps his daughters at the centre of all that he does?
Whilst visiting KL, Robert has thoroughly enjoyed taking trips to Little India and checking out all of the spices. “We can’t get green and black cardamom back home, and over here I’ve been trying out the spices, taking them back to my hotel room and figuring out how I can work with them.” I bet we can look forward to some Asian inspired barbecue dishes on his show!

Oh and I also learned a little something from him...apparently when you marinate any meat with a lemon based marinade be sure not to marinate it for more than 30minutes. The acid in the lemon starts to cook the protein otherwise making the meat rubbery. If you want a lemony hint to your marinade use the zest instead...and then you can use the actual lemon in the basting sauce.

Robert Rainford's Cajun Shrimp with Love Sauce

3 pounds of large shrimp

Marinade:
¼ cup olive oil
Juice from 2 lemons
3 tsp Cajun seasoning

Cajun Love Sauce:
2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 large chopped celery ribs
6 chopped green onions
4 tbs Dijon mustard
4 tbs lemon juice
2 tbs capers
3 tbs chopped cilantro
2 tsp Tabasco
2 tsp horseradish
1 tsp Cajun seasoning
Salt to taste

1 cup Hickory wood chips soaked in cold water for 30minutes
2 cups dry Hickory wood chips

Peel shrimp, leaving their tails on and toss with olive oil, lemon juice, Cajun seasoning and let marinate in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Remove shrimp from the marinade and let come to room temperature. Preheat the barbecue to 110C.

Squeeze the water from the wet chips and place them in the centre of a large piece of foil and add the dry chips to it and mix. Fold the foil into a sealed pouch and poke holes into the pouch to allow smoke to escape.

Turn one burner to medium high heat and place the wood chips directly over the flames. Turn the other burners off. Once the grill is smoking, quickly place the shrimp directly over the grills that are off. Smoke shrimp with indirect heat for 10minutes or until pink and slightly caramelised.

Meanwhile add all the ingredients for the Cajun Love Sauce to a blender and puree until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Combine the smoked shrimp with the Cajun Love Sauce in a serving dish and chill for up to 2 hours. Serve and enjoy!

A Foodie in Bali

Bali was...sigh...Bali. What can be said about this island that hasn't already been said? It's beautiful, spiritual, the people are some of the loveliest you will ever meet...and to me it is the ultimate paradise with something for everyone...

There are the beaches with giant waves perfect for surfing...beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling...areas where you can swim with dolphins...cliffs with amazing views of the sunset...intricate temples...statues that tell a tale...cascading views of rice paddies...volcanoes to trek...cultural dances to marvel in...gorgeous architecture and interiors...and this is only the tip of the iceberg!

And as far as the food scene here goes...it does not disappoint...this too is a melange of all sorts...uber fresh seafood barbecues on the beach...tiny warungs(stalls) with local dishes...world class dining....Italian, Japanese, Fusion, Indian, Chinese, Greek...you name it...they've got it...and it tastes great!

Here are just some of the places I enjoyed...I couldn't always take photos due to terrible lighting and for some meals I had forgotten to bring along my camera...so this is what I did capture!

First I'll start you off with a little snack...

We do not get these Pringles flavours in Malaysia and so I just had to try them out. The Basil & Garlic is really good...the ingredients are prominent. The salt and pepper disappointed a little only because it wasn't peppery enough. I would add a lot more pepper before I call these salt and pepper chips.

Daddy's Cafe
Kartika Plaza Street ( Kuta Terrace)
Opposite The Bali Dynasty Hotel
Tel: +62 361 762 037

My breakfasts were always at the same cafe because this place serves amazing value for money. Just take a wild guess at how much this set costs...(Juice, 2 slices of toast, coffee/tea, bacon, eggs, sausages, hash brown, baked tomato, fruit platter and pancake):

So what did you guess? I bet it doesn't even come close! Because when we saw the menu we thought it must have been too good to be true...it was only RP35,000 -> RM 10 -> USD 2.85. Has your jaw dropped yet? I absolutely loved the pancake which was thick and fluffy with a tiny hint of banana (I'm guessing some might have been mashed into the batter)...The hash brown was good too...very crisp with some spices added in. This breakfast was worth waking up for!

Made's Warung
Kuta, Bali
Tel: +62 361 753039

No trip to Bali would be complete without visiting the popular Made's Warung. This is one of the oldest restaurants in Kuta serving up a plethora of dishes both Western and Local. This laid back restaurant is packed with people at all hours of the day and getting a table has us waiting for a few minutes. Once seated I decide to try a local dish known as nasi campur (mixed rice). I go for the vegetarian option with brown rice.

This whole mixed rice platter consists of Tempeh cooked 3 ways...fried crisp like a fritter...boiled in a yellow coconut curry....and chopped up and sauteed with chillies and spices...Green beans cooked in a coconut curry as well...Stewed eggplant...Chopped cucumber...Sambal (chili paste)...and Toasted coconut...

All the flavours in this dish are fragrant and complex...it was so good that I finished every last bite. The brown rice tasted as though it had been cooked in chicken stock...it was savoury and chewy...I adore tempeh and having it cooked 3 different ways was a major treat! This whole plate of goodness only cost me RP27,000 -> RM7.71 -> USD 2.20.

Nammos Beach Club
Karma Kandara
Uluwatu
http://www.karmakandara.com/

If you're looking to splurge a bit and enjoy a meal at a pristine beach with a killer view that can only accessed by cable car then I would suggest you make your way over to Karma Kandara and dine at Nammos Beach Club. This area is still relatively new and not many people know about it yet. The food is out of this world and the setting makes it even better. Our group got there a little after lunch time and we decided to get a few little bites to snack on.

A tuna sashimi pizza with wasabi cream...

This was certainly different! The pizza crust was crisp and the tuna sashimi was generous with a sprinkling of salt and a squeeze of lemon. It was topped off with pieces of rocket. I enjoyed the crisp pizza base with the soft tuna and the peppery rocket...but to tell you the truth I couldn't taste the wasabi cream...that could have been stronger. All in all I give this a thumbs up...especially because I've never had a pizza like this before!

We also went for some hummus and pita..

The hummus was very creamy, lemony, and garlicky! Just the way I like it. This was devoured pretty quickly. Along with some roasted portobello mushrooms...these were thick and juicy...very enjoyable!

We also ordered the grilled chicken skewers with cous cous...

The chicken is tender with a smoky hint of the grill. It had been rubbed in Mediterranean spices and goes beautifully with the saffron couscous with chopped cranberries.

The food at Nammos Beach Club is simple but done well. You couldn't ask for more when glancing out at the sparkling blue ocean and enjoying a bite to eat.

Kunyit Bali
Jalan Kartika Plaza
Tuban

About halfway through our trip we were craving a full fledged authentic Balinese meal. Kunyit Bali is one of the restaurants that serves an authentic rijsttafel. This is actually a Dutch word that meals 'rice table'. It is an elaborate meal consisting of many side dishes served in small portions, accompanied by rice.

The starters consisted of chicken, lamb, beef, and fish satay...the famous sup buntut (oxtail soup)...and fried tofu...

The soup is very light, the meat is melt in your mouth tender, and the garlic chips and fried onions sprinkled on top gives it a wonderful fragrance. Garlic lovers like me can delight in scooping up as many garlic chips as possible...when combined with the clean tasting soup it's worthy of the campbell's motto...mmm mmm good! Out of the different types of satay I would say that the fish one was my favourite...the lightness of the fish allowed the marinade to shine and it was lovely dipped in the accompanying fiery chili padi coconut sambal. The fried tofu was nice dipped in the chili padi sauce as well as the peanut sauce.

The next round offered grilled fish, chicken stewed in coconut curry, a lamb stew, sauteed green beans, and gado gado (a traditional Indonesian vegetable salad with a peanut sauce dressing).

The fish was once again my favourite in this lineup...topped with red onions and chopped chillies and spices it made for a wonderful taste sensation. I could eat grilled fish anytime...there is just something so wonderful about it! The stewed chicken was a little dry...so I didn't particularly enjoy the texture...but it tasted good...the lamb stew was tasty and the meat was extremely tender...if you like lamb I'm sure this dish would win you over!

Dessert is an assortment of fruits and Indonesian cakes...

I love love love the oranges you can get in Indonesia...they're not the same as anywhere else...there's a different taste to them altogether...the skin is green so you would think they're unripe...but that isn't the case! And they're a little harder in their segments...but just as juicy on the inside...and so easy to peel...it's so hard to explain...but I would eat these over normal oranges anyday! The bananas wrapped in crepes are also very nice...and the steamed green cake with coconut is lovely...but we all did not like the onde onde (little dough balls filled with brown sugar and rolled in coconut)...usually we would adore these...but at Kunyit Bali they didn't taste right...but after a great meal like that one little glitch isn't enough to ruin it.

All this for only RP113,000 -> RM32 -> USD 11.30.

Garis Garis
Jalan Kartika Plaza
Tuban

Eachday as we walked from our hotel to different parts of the town we always walked past Garis Garis and the decor was what attracted us. It was nicely lit...beautiful interiors...and an overall welcoming ambience. We knew we just HAD to try them out. So one dinner we treated ourselves to a little wine and dine.

We tried out the Bali Hatten Wine which was not bad! Very light, crisp and refreshing...our group had 2 bottles to go along with the wonderful dinner.

I chose the steak as I was missing my red meat...

It was tender and cooked medium...just the way I like it! I enjoyed mopping up the sauce with my crispy fries...

R went for the whole fried fish topped with a fiery sambal...looks sooo good!

He finished every last bit of it...I got a tiny bit to taste and I must say this was sublime! The fish was tender and flaky with a slight crispy fried exterior...and the sambal topped it off with a great bite!

Once done with our mains we decided to split 2 desserts between the 4 of us...An ice cream filled profiterole drizzled in chocolate... And the crepes suzette...unfortunately the crepes were not lit tableside...which would have added to the fun...the profiteroles were as light as air with a creamy vanilla ice cream middle...this was the perfect end to a wonderful meal that was only RP100,000 -> RM28 -> USD10 per person...and this was WITH the wines.

Cafe Bagus
Next to Intercontinental Hotel
Jimbaran

And I've saved the best for last! This is one of my favourite places to eat in Bali and my family and I have been coming here for years and years...I don't have any photos to document the experience though as the dinner is on the beach eaten by candlelight...you can barely see what you're eating let alone photograph it...but let me tell you...if you can have only 1 food experience in Bali this should be it.

Picture yourself sitting at a table on the beach...your feet touching the cool sand...waves crashing just a few steps away from you...and a menu filled with the freshest just caught a few hours ago seafood. All of it is just waiting to be thrown on the grill and enjoyed in all it's bare unmarinated glory. We ordered three types of fish, king prawns, cuttlefish, and a lobster...all of it is charred perfectly on the grill and served with limes and a sambal...all you need to do is squeeze a bit of lime...dip it in sambal and you're in heaven. The sweetness and freshness of the seafood cannot be beaten...your toes digging in the sand makes it even better...and the harmonious sounds of the acoustic traveling band in the distance make this the ultimate Bali must have experience!

I have only just scratched the surface and there are many many more places that are worthy of trying out in Bali...but I'm sure you can see the overall trend here...it's usually very good value for money! Hmm...now to plan my next eating trip there...hehe...

Nippy Noodles

I'm heading off to Bali for 10days starting tomorrow and so there won't be any new posts in that time...but I will be taking lots of photos and eating a ton of food in Bali so there will be a mini Bali food guide on here once I get back!

A few weeks ago I was recommended a noodle shop that makes the traditional Chinese bamboo noodles. Upon hearing the term bamboo noodles I was instantly intrigued! The first time I had heard of it was when I watched Anthony Bourdain on No Reservations attempt to make these noodles...it looked like a lot of hard work with a bit of fun mixed in...and so I knew I had to give these noodles a try!

Bamboo noodles originated in China in the early 1900’s in the Guang Zhao province. Making noodles in this old-fashioned way requires a lot of skill and patience. At Nippy Noodles they mix premium flour and omega eggs without the addition of any other liquid or preservatives. This gives it the perfect bouncy consistency and fresh egg aroma. A bamboo is then used to flatten the noodles and work the dough. This is done by physically sitting on the bamboo and bouncing along on the dough with it. After this process, the noodles are cut by hand and the prepared (either dry or with a soup). The noodles here are made fresh daily and there are no leftovers by the end of the day.

We tried out the wantan noodles with mushrooms as well as with stewed chicken...
On the side we went crazy with a bunch of porky dishes…a combination platter with barbecue pork slices and crispy deep fried pork slices...
The barbecue pork slices are thin and not too fatty and go well with the noodles. The skin on the crispy fried pork is uber crunchy and tasty revealing a tender fatty meat beneath.
Stewed pork ribs…
I especially enjoy the stewed pork ribs as the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender and covered in a thick fragrant sauce.
And to balance out the porkiness fish paste and prawn dumplings...

The fried fish paste prawn dumplings are a little tasteless in comparison to the other dishes and so I focus most of my energy on the meat.

The highlight in this store though is the noodle and let me tell you right now that it is absolutely sublime. There is a bounce when you bite down and the noodles don’t clump together. They are thin and light and have a good overall texture. Honestly, you could just order a bowl of these noodles, pour in a few spoonfuls of soup, mix it up with the light soy sauce that is already in the bowl, add some chillies, and you would have a very nice meatless meal.

If you get to this noodle shop early you might just be lucky enough to see them make the noodles with the bamboo method as there is a window area that allows you to look into the kitchen where the noodles are prepared. Either way, experiencing this springy delight is a must.

Asian Noodle Soup

Even though I'm half Asian and I've spent most of my life living in Asia I rarely cook Asian meals...sure my Western dishes might have a little bit of Asian flair as far as spices or seasonings go...but I just don't cook Asian food...I suppose it's because I can just walk down the street and find all sorts of stalls with anything I could want...Chinese dishes, Indian curries and rotis, Malay rice dishes...and it's cheap...dirt cheap.

So buying all the ingredients and cooking it myself is actually more expensive than just stepping out my front door. The only reason anyone living here would want to cook it themselves is if they want to be healthy...because although the stalls have very tasty food it is usually cooked with the lowest quality of ingredients and usually very high in fat.

Last night I decided to make my first Noodle soup dish...just the way I like it with green leafy veggies, large juicy oyster mushrooms, little pieces of tofu and an egg cracked into the soup and muddled in...it turned out very well! Extremely delicious and full of good proteins and hardly any fat. I think I'll be making more of my own Asian dishes from now on!

Spicy Noodle Soup

Chicken broth (This depends on how many you are cooking for and how soupy you like it)
5 Ginger slices
3 Garlic cloves, smashed
2 tbs Light Soy Sauce
2 tbs Chilli Sesame Oil
Handful of green leafy veg (I used choy sam, you can use spinach or anything you enjoy)
Handful of oyster mushrooms
Handful of diced firm tofu
Handful of noodle of your choice (I used soba)
1 Egg

Bring the chicken broth to a boil with the ginger and the garlic. Turn it down to simmer for 15mins. Bring it back up to a boil and toss in the noodles. Once they start to soften add in the tofu and mushrooms. Break the egg into the pot and whisk it around to make the broth murky. Turn off the heat and add in the leafy veg and once it starts to wilt add in the soy sauce and chilli sesame oil. Voila! A simple nutritious and tasty meal.

Mango Mania

I love mangos! Garlic if you are reading this please don't be jealous but your flavour just can't cross over to dessert and so as much as I love you so I do sometimes need some sugary love in my life...

So uhm where was I? Oh yeah...

Deep orangey yellow flesh...honey sticky sweetness with a citrus tang...wonderful when cold out of the fridge...even better when blitzed in the blender with crushed ice to make a refreshing fruity beverage. Heavenly!

This is exactly why I had to try out Mango Mania...a place that pays homage to this delicious fruit. Most of the menu has something to do with mangos...There are all kinds of smoothies...a mango yoghurt with fresh mangos...a refrigerated casing holds a few varieties of mango (Indian, Thai, etc.) that you can pick to top your yoghurt off...There are even savoury options for meals...

I tried out the Mango Fish Burger...

A regular fried fish fillet is topped off with a mango cream sauce and a thin slice of mango and then sandwiched in between a burger bun. This is almost like a Mc Donald's Fillet O Fish...but with a juicy sweet mango and a cream sauce...Who would have ever thought to pair fish and mango? Oh but it works! I am thinking of trying this at home one day...

I also had a smoothie to wash my burger down and I opted for the Berry Blaster...

This is done with mango juice, banana, blueberries, and mango yoghurt. Very filling and refreshing!

Next time I stop here I'll be getting the grilled mango with ice cream...or maybe the mango chicken stir fry...or the mango cheesecake...oh the mango possibilities! How does one decide?

Tea for Two

Aida and I had another one of those lunch hours where we decided to treat ourselves to something new. The Jalan Bangkung row has some lovely restaurants but we never journey there for lunch and even for dinner it's a place that I only think to go once or twice a year. I think it's because it's away from the usual bustling Bangsar circuit and all the shops so unfortunately people tend to give it a miss. It's a shame but I guess this is where the term 'location is key' comes into play.

We happened to find ourselves on this row during our lunch yesterday as a new holistic shop had opened up and we wanted to check out their selection of essential oils and natural beauty products. After a bit of shopping to soothe the soul we decided to try out one of the lunch specials that all the restaurants were offering.

Tea for Two's lunch menu sounded both appealing and agreed with our wallets (RM19 for a soup, main, and dessert) and so our minds were made up.

It started off with a cream of broccoli soup with a slice of garlic toasted baguette..

The soup was rich and creamy...filling enough that I could have probably been happy with just that and the bread. The bread had a strong garlic aroma and was crisp and buttery. I enjoyed taking alternate slurps of soup and bites of the bread.

There was a choice between a pasta dish and a chicken dish for the mains and I went for the chicken...

This was a chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and chives with a side of chips and salad...The chicken was pan seared and had a lovely crisp golden exterior while the middle stayed very moist. I believe the mushrooms helped to give the chicken more tenderness. I was happy to see fries as I've been staying away from them for a while now and so I figured I could indulge just a little. Good thing it was balanced out by the salad!

Dessert was a simple scoop of vanilla ice cream with a chocolate drizzle...I was stuffed by this point and so only had a few bites.

This set lunch was definitely worth it...but since I'm not used to having such heavy lunches I was sleepy the rest of the day...haha...so I guess it's not a menu that is conducive to a desk job.

Restoran Kolam Air

R and I have this weird habit when it comes to eating out...it goes a little something like this:

1. We find a new place and love it!

2. We go back there at least once or twice a week for a month or sometimes even longer...it's at least long enough that the staff at these restaurants get to know us and can even remember the dishes that we enjoy.

3. Then we'll get busy, life gets in the way, and we can't make it back to that restaurant for a while.

4. The next time we have a chance to eat out and we decide on where to eat sudden amnesia develops, we forget about that restaurant and find a new place.

5. And the cycle starts all over again...

There are many times we've done that...it's as if we gorge ourselves on the good food and then we're sick of it and we just move on as if that place never existed. It's kind of harsh...and I'm sure the staff that are so used to our weekly visits wonder where we've disappeared to. Usually we don't feel too bad because these restaurants do well and we're sure they don't miss us...but sometimes there are the little stalls that do know us quite well and have come to expect us a few nights a week...

Infact it happened recently when we revisited a Chinese shop in our old neighborhood...we had stopped eating there not because of the food or anything related to that...it was because we had moved and there were so many new restaurants to distract us...and being as flaky as we are about restaurants we just simply forgot.

So when we got there the woman who owns the place immediately recognized us and said "Wah! So long you never come here. You move to new place ah?"...and the guilt washed over us...because the food here is good...really good...and we allowed ourselves to be swayed by shiny flashy new restaurants...and we forgot the little place that fed us many evenings when I didn't have a kitchen to cook.

And once we ordered our favourite dishes we took one bite...and the memories came flooding back...the amnesia cloud had lifted...and we enjoyed every last bite!

We ordered our favourite Cantonese kway teow bihun.

A very crispy fried nest of bihun(rice vermicelli) is placed on a plate then topped with wide slices of charred kway teow (flat noodle) and then finished off with a thick eggy sauce ladled on top. This dish can be found in almost any Chinese shop, but it is not always done right. Sometimes the sauce can be too thick with hardly any flavour, or the bihun has been sitting in the sauce for too long and has turned soggy…the list of how many ways this dish can go wrong can go on and on. Here however they get it right every time…the sauce is so tasty on its own that I slurp it up like a soup with some of their special sambal (chilli paste) mixed in…the bihun maintains its crispness on the inside as the outside softens and the kway teow has just the right amount of smoky wok hei (essence of the wok). Ordering this is a must!

We also ordered the sweet and sour pork
The pork has a lovely fried batter exterior to give it that crunch upon first bite and then it reveals a tender juicy piece of pork. This play on texture coupled with the sweet tanginess of the sauce is lip smackingly good!

The ginger fish fillet dish is light with a gingery sauce and the spring onions give it a nice crunch and sweetness. The fillet pieces are very fresh and so soft that they fall apart the minute they’re in your mouth. This is perfect for people who don’t want to order a whole fish but would still like to have a fish dish.

The last thing that comes highly recommended here is the pot of sambal that sits on every table. This is so tasty that I could be happy just having that and plain rice. It adds additional flavour and a nice heat to all the dishes served here. Absolutely delicious!

After this meal I think R and I will come back more often...maybe not once a week...but at least once a month. We will put this on our 'Do Not Forget' lists :)
